Scouting the Territory

Since the first blog post, I have refined my topic by choosing to focus solely on the Nazca Lines. I believe this option will allow me to explore all possibilities of how and why these ancient ruins were created. By focusing on one myth instead of seven, it will allow me to better understand and research information and find evidence to develop a solid argument.

The key terms I searched up were: Nazca Lines, Nazca Lines theories, and Nazca Lines Aliens. I found an episode of Ancient Aliens that uncovers the theories concerning the Nazca Lines that I wanted to discuss in my paper. In this episode, they discuss how different theorists believe that the Nazca Lines could be the work of extraterrestrial beings.

A book that seems to be linked to the Nazca Lines is Erich Von Daniken's book Chariot of the Gods which was published in 1968. This book discusses the possibility that extraterrestrial beings had an influence on ancient technology. He adopted a theory that these geoglyphs were constructed as replicas of alien structures in order to attract them back to Earth. Regardless of how crazy some of these theories may sound, I find the concepts rather compelling and hope to delve deeper in the future.

Issues that are commonly discussed are whether or not aliens created the Nazca Lines. It's argued that beings with higher intelligence constructed them instead of individuals from the Nazca civilization. Another issue that is up for debate is whether the Nazca Lines were constructed to create a water channel in order to get through El NiƱo. Other issues discuss that the geoglyphs of Nazca were created as a sort of offering or form of communication with their gods. As I continue to research more about this topic, I'm sure I will find other theories associated with this topic.

One resource I found was a youtube video titled 'World of Mysteries-Crop Circles and Desert Lines'.  I found this useful because it can provide a little more background on my topic and help me build a more solid foundation and understanding.

Another resource I found to be interesting was this article titled 'The Nasca Lines Solution'. This article can be used as supplementary material to further my understanding of the topic and help me develop my thesis.

The only controversy concerning my topic that I was able to find online is that the Peruvian government is facing back lash for not properly protecting the Nazca Lines. Environmental factors have threatened to destroy these ancient geoglyphs. In connection with this, a GreenPeace stunt last year threatened this sacred land when they placed a giant sign near the drawing of a humming bird in order to promote renewable energy. The Peruvian Government was furious and began a criminal investigation on the grounds that they destroyed the fragile area. In my opinion, I believe that Peru needs to enforce harsher rules in order to protect their landmarks.

  1. Good focus. This week, you should look for and read the scholarly work of David Johnson and his collaborators, which will help you fulfill the scholarly research component of the assignment.
